Working in the music industry, I come across a lot of talented artists, musicians and producers. For some, the word talented could not describe how good some of these people really are. However, most of these same talented individuals seem to think that their talent is enough to establish them in the music industry.
“Time to get into the studio.”
“Time to go to the gym,”
“Let’s go do some networking.”
Many of us, as industry professionals, have said this time and time again to the “talented ones.” What is the response we seem to get from most of them?
“I’m not up to pressing stop and play in the studio.”
“I don’t think I need to workout…I did that a week ago, I’m fine.”
“Isn’t it your job to do the networking?”
Where Is The Passion?!?
To be a great artist, you have to have a desire. This desire has to burn so bad that you have a hard time focusing on anything else in your life. When you sleep, you dream about what you plan to do with your music career. You workout in the gym to get yourself physically fit so you can have the stamina to go on tour for months and perform at your best ability. You have to have someone literally drag you out of the recording studio because you want nothing more in this world than to make great music. When an opportunity comes to meet other industry professionals, you are humble, professional and eager to learn from others that have been successful. This is what it means to be an artist with passion.
Many artists have already believed their own hype. They tend to believe that they are a superstar when they have never seen an ounce of success. Let your passion speak for itself. Let your passion speak through your music. Let us get back to the days when music was about what we felt instead of what we think it will get us. It cannot be about the glitz and the glamour because we lose focus on why we decided to get into this wonderful industry. Try to think about how it feels when you have a person that you have never met, recite your lyrics and sing your song with more passion than you sang it. “Heeeeyyyy, that’s my song!” That is a wonderful feeling!
If you have lost that passion for some reason, find it again. Find the true reason to break through into this industry. Learn to do what most will not do because that is what has made the successful people a true success. If it requires you to run down the street and get some cheesecake for P. Diddy…Run Forrest Run!!! If you have to make your first album in the small, but quality home recording studio then sell them to every single person you meet, just do it! Do not let your ego stand in the way of your success. In order to be a success, you must work hard for it and the one thing that will drive you to that success will be your passion to be the best you can be!
